How often should racking be inspected?
Immediate
Staff must report damage as soon as it happens and isolate the bay until it can be assessed.
Weekly
A trained Person Responsible for Racking Safety (PRRS) should carry out a visual check.
Annual
An expert inspection by a SEMA Approved Racking Inspector is required by law for most operations.
The traffic light system
Green
The racking is safe to use. No immediate action is required.
Amber
Action is required as soon as possible. A repair or further assessment is needed.
Red
The rack is unsafe. It must be offloaded and repaired before it is put back into service.
Your legal obligations
Employers have a duty under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, the Workplace (Health, Safety and Welfare) Regulations 1992 and PUWER 1998 to provide safe work equipment and a safe workplace. For pallet racking, this means regular inspection by a competent person and prompt action on damage.
